Travel: Gothic Weekend. WHITBY

Following the spirit of The Nightmare before Christmas I will take away the leadership from the recently finished Christmas holidays to talk about Halloween.

After the day of the dead, as people would say in Mexico, I had some free time and I decide to go to Whitby , a little town on the north east coast of England. Famous among other things thanks to Bram Stoker´s book Dracula.
The author stayed in Whitby for three weeks while he was writing the book. The dark, dismal, and magical environment here clearly inspired him. If you know the book, you'll know that Whitby was the place Dracula arrived in England looking for his love, Mina.

I was very excited of being there as a good fan of the book, films and everything about Dracula and with the gothic weekend, that it is celebrated after Hallowenn, the show was served.

After seeing the abbey we walked through the gothic cemetery next to it, it is stunning, set in turn on a cliff has amazing views, here we found lots of photographers taking pictures of everyone who was dressed for the occasion.

They took pictures even of me and I looked more like a amish, hehehe.

Then we went down to the village, the center of it was charming, with little streets, craft shops and even a vintage outdoor market. But everything was crowded, many people flock to this annual event.

I expected to see more people dressed up with victorian clothes but I was half wrong, not everything is victorian elegance, you can find Freddy Krueger itself walking down the street.

During the weekend there is a masked ball dance that you can only attend if you are dress up for the occasion and there are concerts and a film festival of Dracula.

Walking across the bridge we arrived to the seafront, with all its boats, its fish and chips and amusement arcades so typical of the coastal towns in England.

We ate fish and chips but the real one, till that date I didn´t realise that the authentic one has vinegar and salt, without kepchup or any other sauces. And it is really nice!

After the food and after walking in the cold we decide to enter in one of the amusment arcade . We ate donuts, wich are similar to the spanish churros ( Really nice too) and after play bowling we played in one of that machines where you have to get something with tweezers and it seem impossible, well, I won two tea monkeys :)

We had bought tickets to see a Dracula´s performance at the abbey and while we were waiting to it we walked across the dark streets I took so many pictures of the remnants Halloween decoration that I found in the streets. I love that macabre contrast of skeletons, skulls and colors. Plus I love pumpkins and I took pictures of all the pumpkins I found.

There were also Fireworks.

It was that cold that I could not stand to see the outdoor performance in the abbey but the trip was worth it.

If you go to Whitby anytime, go prepare for cold ;)
